Drunk Proof support

How can we help?

Answers to common questions are below. Still stuck? Email hello@ndsstudio.co.uk and we'll get back to you, usually within two working days.

In an emergency, call 999. Phone calls are never locked by Drunk Proof.

Is Drunk Proof out yet?

Not quite. Drunk Proof is coming soon to the App Store for iPhone (iOS 16 or later). Email us if you'd like to know when it launches.

Does 999 still work while Drunk Proof is on?

Yes, always. iOS never lets an app lock phone calls, so you can always call 999 (or anyone) from the Phone app. While Drunk Proof is on, the Lock Down tab also has a big Call 999 button.

How do I unlock early?

It's deliberately hard, because that's the point. On the Lock Down tab, tap Unlock early…, then:

  1. Pass each sobriety test you switched on (typing, mental maths and reaction time). If you recorded sober scores on the Test tab, you need to get close to them.
  2. Wait out the cooling-off period (15 minutes unless you changed it in Setup).
  3. Type the confirmation sentence exactly.

If you fail a test, you're locked out of trying again for a while (10 minutes unless you changed it).

How do I switch it off in an emergency?

You've got three options:

  1. Wait for your unlock time. Drunk Proof switches itself off.
  2. Use Unlock early… as above.
  3. Open the iPhone Settings app, tap Screen Time, find Drunk Proof in the list of apps with Screen Time access, and turn it off. This removes all of Drunk Proof's restrictions straight away. The Settings app is never locked.
Drunk Proof didn't unlock at my unlock time

Open Drunk Proof once. It checks the time and unlocks straight away. If apps still show the “Not tonight” screen, restart your iPhone, or switch Drunk Proof's Screen Time access off and on again in Settings › Screen Time. Unlock times less than about 15 minutes away can take a little longer, because iOS needs at least 15 minutes for a scheduled unlock.

Why can't I delete Drunk Proof while it's on?

Drunk Proof stops itself being deleted while it's on, so drunk you can't get round it. Wait for the unlock time, unlock early, or switch off its Screen Time access in Settings first. Then you can delete it as normal.

Can I allow WhatsApp or Messages for just one person?

No. iOS can only allow or lock a whole app, not individual chats. We suggest leaving WhatsApp and Messages locked and using the blue Message button next to each safe contact in Drunk Proof. It sends a normal text or iMessage without opening the Messages app.

How do I keep Apple Pay for the taxi home?

Add Wallet as a safe app in Setup before you activate. It's worth adding your taxi app and Maps too.

I picked a whole category, but those apps still locked

Choose individual apps as safe apps. Choosing a whole category (for example “Travel”) doesn't keep it unlocked.

The Message button says it can't send texts

This happens on devices that can't send texts, for example an iPad, the Xcode Simulator, or an iPhone with no SIM and iMessage turned off. You can still call your safe contacts.

My test version stopped opening after about a week

If you're helping us test an early version of Drunk Proof installed from a Mac with a free Apple account, iOS stops it opening after 7 days. Reconnect to the Mac and install it again. TestFlight beta versions expire after 90 days, so install the latest one from the TestFlight app. Neither affects the App Store version.

What happens to my data?

It stays on your iPhone. Drunk Proof has no account, no tracking and no ads, and it doesn't send anything to us. Read the privacy policy.
